Don't forget that when Scar runs to warn Mufassa that Simba is caught in a stampede- Zazu is with Mufassa. Scar now has the control of Mufassa's 'stooge', and could arrange for Zazu to distract Mufassa the next day, giving Scar the chance to lure Simba to the gorge right below the wildabeast. But why this sudden change of heart? Why this newfound confidence following a failed attempt? (Little did he know this was deliberate however.) After this, Scar sings a musical number detailing his plan to now kill both Simba and Mufassa.

Obviously this attempt fails, and Zazu is given a scornful look by Mufassa who can sense that Zazu did not adequately look after Simba. This would explain why ravenous hyenas, when given ample chance to eat Zazu decide only to taunt him and stick him in a hot pot to fly out off- because Scar informed them that Zazu was an inside agent and whilst they could have their fun, he needs to be kept alive. Zazu merely believed that Scar wanted Simba dead so he would be next in line, not Mufassa, which is why Scar only tries to kill Simba first, not Mufassa. One problem: How did Zazu know they'd be there? Zazu was taking them to the waterhole, yet when he escapes he knows they've gone to outside the Prideland, who could have told him? Only one other person knows.īetween Zazu and Scars first onscreen conversation and before the Elephant graveyard, (my guess would be immediately after 'I just can't wait to be King.') Scar and Zazu must have met and Scar may have sensed Zazu's displeasure and told him they were going to graveyard to be killed, and Zazu could help. As they arrive, Zazu reappears to scold them. Zazu is off screen for a while as Simba and Nala leave him under a rhino as they venture to the Elephant Graveyard. Along the way, Zazu is abused and threatened to be fired by Simba which only cements his view that Simba must never become King. Scar lures Simba and Nala down to the elephant graveyard to be eaten by Hyenas. Yet once Scar makes it clear that he wishes to become King, Zazu remembers this later as once he doubts Simba, he remembers there is a more (in his mind) suitable heir. At this point, Zazu is loyal to Mufassa and as Simba isn't even talking yet, he has no reason to believe he is a threat. Zazu confronts Scar about not attending the ceremony. But when considering the chain of events in this movie, things become clearer.

TIME LINE: I know what you're thinking, Zazu and Scar and rarely seen together and when they are it is antagonistic. Simba declares that when he's King he will fire Zazu, both directly and in his song ( 'Kings don't need advice from little hornbills for a start!') Is it unreasonable, that concerned that Mufassa is blind to Simba's flaws and worried about his career and the monarch would do all he could to ensure that Simba didn't become King?Ģ. Not only this, but Zazu is worried about his own future. 'If this is where the monarchy is headed: count me out! Out of service, out of Africa, I wouldn't hang about! This child is getting wildly out of wing., 'You're shaping up to be a pretty pathetic King with an attitude like that. Zazu echoes these concerns through the film: However I do not believe that Zazu wanted Mufassa dead, but rather was worried about Mufassa bringing Simba up to be spoilt brat who would ruin the Kingdom. Not only does Mufassa allow this behaviour, he partakes in it by using Zazu as a prop in Simba's pouncing lessons when all Zazu was trying to do was inform him of the situation in the Kingdom. In 'I can't wait to be King' Zazu is trampled on, sat on and disrespected by every animal of the Kingdom, and it is clear that they would know Zazus high status (as Shenzi recognises him later.) It would make sense that Zazu would resent this treatment that Mufassa allows. I propose that Zazu, sick of being belittled and a figure of fun and worried about the Monarchies future colluded with Scar to assisinate Simba, and in the process killing Mufassa.ġ.MOTIVE: It's clear throughout the film that Zazu is treated like a butt monkey by not only Mufassa and Simba but also the whole Kingdom. In the Lion King, Zazu (portrayed by Rowan Atkinson and soon John Oliver) is a hornbill, trusted adviser to King Mufassa and comic relief.
